Alberta Introduces New Worker EOI Flexibility and Refund Measures for Eligible Candidates

The Government of Alberta has announced important updates to its Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), providing greater flexibility for candidates who have submitted a Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI). The changes, which took effect on May 26, 2026, are designed to improve the user experience and reduce administrative burdens for prospective immigrants seeking provincial nomination through Alberta’s immigration pathways.

One of the most significant changes is that candidates can now edit their Worker Expression of Interest after it has been submitted. Previously, individuals who discovered errors or needed to update information in their WEOI often had to cancel their submission and create a new one. This process could be inconvenient, particularly after Alberta introduced a WEOI submission fee earlier this year. Under the new policy, candidates can make necessary updates to their profiles without withdrawing their existing submission.

The AAIP has clarified that editing a WEOI will not affect its original validity period. Worker Expressions of Interest remain valid for one year from the date they are submitted, and updating information does not extend or reset that timeframe. This ensures that candidates can maintain their place in the pool while keeping their information accurate and up to date.

In addition to profile editing, Alberta has introduced greater flexibility regarding invitations issued through the AAIP. Candidates who receive an invitation to apply under a stream that does not match their immigration goals may now decline the invitation and return to the Worker Expression of Interest pool. To do so, they must reject the invitation before the standard 15-day response period expires. This change provides candidates with more control over their immigration journey and allows them to wait for opportunities that better align with their qualifications and long-term plans.

Another notable component of the update involves fee refunds for certain applicants. Alberta introduced a $135 Worker Expression of Interest fee on April 7, 2026. Between April 7 and May 26, some candidates were required to cancel and recreate their WEOI profiles because the system did not allow edits after submission. Recognizing this issue, the province has announced that eligible candidates may request a refund of the original fee paid for the cancelled profile.

However, not all candidates will qualify for a refund. Alberta has specified that refunds will only be available to individuals who cancelled their Worker Expression of Interest solely to correct or update information. Candidates who withdrew their profiles during an invitation period and submitted a new WEOI are not eligible. Likewise, those who cancelled their profile because they needed to update their federal Express Entry profile information will not qualify for reimbursement. Refund requests must be submitted through Alberta’s official immigration contact channels.

The changes are part of Alberta’s broader efforts to improve the efficiency and fairness of its immigration system. By allowing profile edits and offering refunds in limited circumstances, the province aims to reduce unnecessary administrative work while ensuring that candidates have an opportunity to maintain accurate applications. The updated system also helps prevent applicants from losing their position in the selection pool due to minor errors or changes in personal information.

The Worker Expression of Interest system plays a critical role in Alberta’s provincial immigration selection process. Through this system, candidates submit information about their skills, education, work experience, language abilities, and other factors. Alberta then conducts invitation rounds to identify candidates who best meet provincial labour market needs and economic priorities. Maintaining accurate profile information is therefore essential for candidates seeking an invitation.

For prospective immigrants, these updates represent a positive development and demonstrate Alberta’s commitment to creating a more flexible and user-friendly immigration process. Candidates who have already submitted a Worker Expression of Interest should review their profiles to ensure all information is current and take advantage of the new editing feature when necessary. As Alberta continues to refine its immigration programs, these measures are expected to improve both applicant experience and program efficiency while supporting the province’s long-term economic and workforce objectives.
