About Email Writing Task
In the CELPIP-General Test, the Writing Section consists of two tasks, with Task 1 being the Email Writing Task. This task requires test takers to write a formal or informal email based on a given scenario. The goal is to assess the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in written English in a practical, everyday context.
Key Points to Remember:
- Understanding the Scenario: Read the prompt carefully to understand the situation, the audience, and the purpose of the email.
- Tone and Style: Determine whether the email should be formal or informal based on the context and the recipient.
- Structure: Follow a clear structure with an appropriate greeting, opening statement, body paragraphs, and a closing statement.
- Content: Address all parts of the task, providing relevant details and maintaining coherence throughout the email.
- Language Use: Use varied vocabulary and sentence structures, and ensure correct grammar and spelling.
Examples
Example 1: Formal Email
Prompt: You recently visited a restaurant and were dissatisfied with the service you received. Write an email to the restaurant manager explaining the situation, expressing your concerns, and suggesting how they can improve their service.
Email:
Dear [Manager's Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention some concerns regarding my recent visit to your restaurant on [date].
Unfortunately, the experience was far from satisfactory. Firstly, there was a significant delay in being seated despite having a reservation. Additionally, the service was quite slow, and our server seemed inattentive to our needs. Furthermore, the quality of the food did not meet our expectations, as it was both undercooked and lacking in flavor.
I believe that with some improvements, your restaurant can provide a much better experience for its patrons. Specifically, I suggest ensuring that reservations are managed more efficiently, training staff to be more attentive, and reviewing the quality control processes in your kitchen.
I hope you will take these suggestions into consideration to enhance the dining experience for future customers.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
Example 2: Informal Email
Prompt: Your friend is planning to visit your city for the first time. Write an email to your friend giving suggestions on places to visit and things to do.
Email:
Hey [Friend's Name],
I’m so thrilled that you’re coming to visit! There’s so much to see and do here, and I want to make sure you have the best time.
First off, you have to check out [Famous Landmark]. It’s iconic and offers a great view of the city. For some local flavor, head to [Popular Market]. It’s bustling with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to unique crafts. If you’re into art, the [City Art Gallery] is a must-visit. They have an amazing collection of both contemporary and classical works.
As for food, you can’t leave without trying [Local Specialty Dish] at [Famous Restaurant]. And if you’re up for some adventure, [Nearby Park] is perfect for a hike and has stunning scenery.
I can’t wait to show you around and catch up. Let me know if there’s anything specific you want to do or see.
See you soon!
Best,
[Your Name]
