Germany Overtakes US & Canada in Study Abroad Applications from India

In a significant shift in global education trends, Germany has emerged as the leading destination for Indian students pursuing higher education abroad. According to upGrad’s 2024–25 Transnational Education (TNE) Report, Germany now accounts for 32.6% of Indian study abroad applications, surpassing traditional favorites like the United States and Canada.

Decline in US and Canada Applications

The United States, once the top choice for Indian students, has seen a 13% year-on-year decline in applications. Similarly, Canada's share has dropped from 17.85% in 2022 to 9.3% in 2024–25. Factors contributing to this decline include:

  • Visa and Immigration Policies: Recent changes in visa regulations and processing times have made the application process more cumbersome.

  • Diplomatic Relations: Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have affected student mobility.

  • Economic Factors: Rising tuition fees and living costs in the US and Canada have made these destinations less attractive.

Why Germany?

Germany's rise as a preferred destination can be attributed to several factors:

  • Low or No Tuition Fees: Many public universities in Germany offer education with minimal or no tuition fees, making it an affordable option.

  • High-Quality Education: Germany is renowned for its strong academic programs, especially in engineering, technology, and sciences.

  • Post-Study Work Opportunities: The country offers favorable post-study work visas, allowing graduates to gain international work experience.

  • Cultural and Historical Appeal: Germany's rich history, culture, and central location in Europe make it an attractive destination for international students.

Other Rising Destinations

While Germany leads, other countries are also gaining popularity among Indian students:

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE): Hosting 42% of its international student population from India, the UAE is becoming a hub for higher education.

  • Ireland and France: Both countries have seen an increase in applications, with shares of 3.9% and 3.3%, respectively.

Changing Student Priorities

The upGrad report highlights a shift in student priorities:

  • Career Outcomes: 45.7% of students prioritize career opportunities over other factors.

  • Permanent Residency: Only 19.9% view obtaining permanent residency as their primary goal.

This indicates that Indian students are increasingly focusing on the quality of education and career prospects rather than long-term settlement options.
