New Canada Super Visa Changes Effective March 31, 2026

Great news for Canadian families eager to spend more time with parents and grandparents! Starting March 31, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is rolling out major updates to the Super Visa program that will make it easier for thousands more families to qualify.

These changes focus on more flexible income rules, helping hosts who’ve faced temporary financial ups and downs or whose visiting parents and grandparents have their own retirement income.

The Super Visa remains a fast-track option for extended family visits (up to five years per entry) without going through permanent residence sponsorship. Whether you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident inviting loved ones, here’s everything you need to know about the new rules.

Two Flexible Ways to Meet the Income Requirement

On March 20, 2026, IRCC announced two major updates to how family income is calculated for Super Visa eligibility. The goal? To make the program fairer and more accessible while still ensuring visiting parents and grandparents are financially supported during their stay in Canada.

Option 1: Two-Year Income Lookback Previously, IRCC only looked at the most recent tax year. Now, hosts (and any co-signer) can qualify if they met the minimum income threshold in either of the two most recent tax years.

This is a game-changer for families who had a temporary dip in income due to job changes, parental leave, business fluctuations, or other short-term challenges. A strong 2024 income can now offset a weaker 2025, giving a more realistic picture of your financial situation.

Option 2: Combine Host + Visiting Parent/Grandparent Income The biggest update: You can now add the visiting parent’s or grandparent’s own income (pensions, investments, retirement savings, etc.) to the host’s income to reach the required threshold.

This recognizes that many seniors are financially independent and not solely dependent on their Canadian children. If the host covers most of the minimum but falls a bit short, the visitor’s income can bridge the gap.

When Do These Changes Take Effect?

All Super Visa applications submitted on or after March 31, 2026, as well as any still being processed, will be assessed under the new rules. Even if you applied before the announcement, you’ll automatically benefit from the more flexible criteria.

These changes expand eligibility — families who already qualified under the old rules will still qualify.

Super Visa Eligibility Requirements (Updated for 2026)

Both the host in Canada and the visiting parent/grandparent must meet specific criteria.

Host (Child or Grandchild in Canada) Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian under the Indian Act.
  • At least 18 years old and living in Canada.
  • Prove the family relationship.
  • Meet the minimum income requirement (see table below).
  • Provide a signed letter of invitation outlining support and accommodation plans.

Visiting Parent/Grandparent Requirements

  • Must apply from outside Canada.
  • Be admissible to Canada (no criminal or medical issues).
  • Have private health insurance covering at least $100,000 CAD for health care, hospitalization, and repatriation (valid for one year). Foreign policies from OSFI-authorized insurers are now accepted.
  • Complete an IRCC-approved medical exam.
  • Show strong ties to their home country and genuine intent to leave Canada after the visit.

2026 Minimum Income Requirements (LICO + 30%)

The income thresholds are updated annually. Here’s the current table (last revised July 29, 2025):

Number of Family Members Minimum Income Required (CAD)
1 $30,526
2 $38,002
3 $46,720
4 $56,724
5 $64,336
6 $72,560
7 $80,784
Each additional member +$8,224

How to calculate family size: Include the host + spouse/common-law partner + all dependent children + the Super Visa applicant(s) + any previously approved or sponsored family members still under an active undertaking.

Example: A host with a spouse and two kids inviting both parents = family size of 6 → minimum income $72,560.

Application Fees for 2026

Fee Type Amount (CAD)
Super Visa application fee (per person) $100
Biometrics fee (per person) $85
Medical exam (approximate) $200 – $500
Private health insurance (annual, for seniors) $1,500 – $3,000+

or a couple applying together, expect roughly $200 in government fees + $170 biometrics.

Current Super Visa Processing Times (as of March 2026)

Average global processing time: 132 days. Times vary by country and visa office:

  • India: 206 days
  • United States: 214 days
  • Nigeria: 44 days
  • Pakistan: 137 days
  • Philippines: 46 days

Submit a complete application with all documents properly translated to avoid delays.

Who Benefits Most from These Changes?

  • Families with fluctuating income (career changers, new parents, entrepreneurs).

  • Hosts whose visiting parents or grandparents have pensions or savings.

  • Single hosts or newer permanent residents who previously couldn’t meet the threshold alone.

These updates open the door for many more families to reunite without waiting years for permanent residence sponsorship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can parents work on a Super Visa?

No. It’s a visitor visa only. Short study (under 6 months) and volunteering are allowed, but not paid work.

What if my income drops after approval?

The visa won’t be automatically cancelled, but future entries or extensions may face extra questions about continued support.

Do Super Visa holders get provincial health coverage?

Generally no. That’s why private insurance is mandatory.

How does this compare to the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?

Super Visa = temporary visits (faster, no cap, multiple entries). PGP = permanent residence (limited spots, longer process). Many families use Super Visa as a bridge or alternative.

These changes represent a welcome step toward keeping Canadian families together. If you’re planning a Super Visa application, now is an excellent time to prepare.
