New Australian Post-Study Work Permit Extension – Eligibility and Eligible Courses

Introduction

Good news for students in Australia or planning to study there! Recent revisions to Australia's work permit rights now allow international graduates to apply for an extended two-year work permit after completing their studies. This extension is available to graduates of specific courses, aiming to meet the demand for skilled professionals. In this article, we provide comprehensive information about this extended work permit.

The Post-Study Work Stream: Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) under the Post-Study Work Stream is designed for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian university or college. Effective from July 1, 2023, graduates with degrees in high-demand skill areas can qualify for a two-year visa extension.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this extension, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Fulfill all requirements for the Post-Study Work stream of the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).
  • Your qualification must be on the list of eligible qualifications.
  • Graduates with a qualifying degree who submit an application for a Temporary Graduate (Post-Study Work stream) visa on or after 1 July 2023 will be eligible for the extension.
  • On 1 July 2023, eligible graduates who already possess a Temporary Graduate (Post-Study Work stream) visa can register through ImmiAccount for a fee-free extension of their current visa.

Graduates whose Temporary Graduate visa expired prior to July 1, 2023, have temporary arrangements in place.

Courses

Here is the complete list of courses approved by the Australian government for an extended Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) beginning on 1 July 2023. The lists will be reviewed annually in response to changes in the Australian labour market and to address emerging hazards.

Duration of Your Stay

The Temporary Graduate visa allows you to stay in Australia for one to four years after completing your studies, depending on your study location, place of residence, and degree type. Your stay duration is influenced by your initial student visa, your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or your Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream.

Under the work permit extension, the 'stay and work' period for eligible graduates of specific courses and qualifications has been extended as follows:

  • Bachelor's degree graduates can now stay for four years, up from two years.
  • Master's degree graduates are now eligible for five years, up from three years.
  • Doctoral graduates can stay for six years instead of four.

These extensions complement the existing one to two-year extensions for students studying, living, and working in regional Australia.

Other Important Information

  • Visa applicants can include family members, who must meet health and character requirements of the Australian Government.
  • The main applicant pays AUD745.00 for the visa, and additional fees apply for family members. Calculate your visa pricing charges with visa pricing estimator
  • You can travel in and out of Australia while your visa is valid, and time spent outside Australia does not affect the visa's extension.

Conclusion:

The post-study work visa in Australia opens doors to exciting career opportunities, enhanced exposure, and improved employability. Australia's regional cities offer an ideal blend of world-class education and an excellent quality of life. Studying, working, and living in Australia is a rewarding experience.
