Canada has introduced a new Express Entry category dedicated to physicians. This pathway is designed to help doctors who are already working in Canada transition more easily to permanent residence. By targeting healthcare professionals, the initiative aims to address long-standing physician shortages nationwide. Category-based invitations under this stream are expected to begin in early 2026.
Basic Eligibility Criteria
To be considered under the physicians category, candidates must meet the following requirements:
-
Have at least 12 months of continuous full-time work experience (or an equivalent amount of part-time experience) in Canada
-
The work experience must have been gained within the last three years
-
The experience must fall under one of the designated physician occupations
-
Hold an active profile in the Express Entry pool and qualify under an existing Express Entry program
Eligible Physician Occupations
IRCC has limited eligibility to specific physician roles classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. These roles are grouped into three main categories.
General Practitioners and Family Physicians (NOC 31102)
This group includes family physicians and general practitioners who provide primary healthcare services. Their responsibilities typically include diagnosing and treating common illnesses, prescribing medication, delivering preventive care, coordinating patient treatment plans, and providing emergency or acute care when required.
Specialists in Surgery (NOC 31101)
This category covers surgical specialists across various disciplines. It includes professionals such as orthopedic surgeons, cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists, obstetrician-gynecologists, and pediatric surgeons. These specialists perform surgical procedures, manage surgical conditions, and provide expert consultation for complex medical cases.
Specialists in Clinical and Laboratory Medicine (NOC 31100)
This group includes a broad range of medical specialists such as cardiologists, dermatologists, anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, psychiatrists, radiologists, pediatricians, endocrinologists, and pathologists. These professionals focus on diagnosing and treating complex health conditions, interpreting medical tests, and supporting hospital and clinical care teams.
What This Means for Physicians
The new physicians category offers a focused and potentially faster pathway to permanent residence for doctors who have already integrated into Canada’s healthcare system. By prioritizing Canadian work experience and specific high-demand medical roles, this initiative provides greater clarity and opportunity for internationally trained physicians seeking long-term settlement in Canada.
