Canada’s First 2026 Express Entry Draw for Trades Occupations: 3,000 ITAs Issued at CRS 477

If you’re a skilled tradesperson dreaming of permanent residency in Canada, today’s news is exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

On April 2, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held its first Express Entry draw of the year under the updated Trades Occupations category. The department issued 3,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 477.

This marks the 20th Express Entry draw of 2026 and the very first one targeting trades — a category that continues to be a top priority for Canada due to ongoing labour shortages in construction, manufacturing, and industrial sectors.

Why This Draw Matters

The Trades category was refreshed in February 2026 with clearer and slightly stricter eligibility rules (more on that below). This draw proves that IRCC is serious about bringing in skilled trades workers quickly. A CRS cut-off of 477 is notably lower than many general or CEC draws this year, making it one of the most accessible pathways right now for eligible candidates.

Here’s how the 2026 draws stack up so far:

Draw Type ITAs Issued Number of Draws
Canadian Experience Class 30,250 6
French-Language Proficiency 18,000 3
Healthcare & Social Services 4,000 1
Trades Occupations 3,000 1
Provincial Nominee Program 2,939 7
Others (Physicians, Managers, etc.) ~1,641 4

Total ITAs in 2026 (as of April 2): 58,830

Who Qualified for This Trades Draw?

To be invited, candidates needed:

  • A minimum CRS score of 477
  • An Express Entry profile created before 8:53 p.m. UTC on February 14, 2026
  • At least 12 months of full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time) in a single eligible trade occupation within the last 3 years (this can be in Canada or abroad)

Important update from February 2026: IRCC increased the minimum work experience requirement from 6 to 12 months for category-based draws and removed “Cooks” from the list. The focus is now firmly on core Red Seal trades and other in-demand occupations such as electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, machinists, and heavy-duty equipment mechanics.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re a tradesperson with the right NOC code and work experience, your chances just got significantly better. Category-based draws like this one often have lower CRS cut-offs than general draws, giving candidates without Canadian work experience or high language scores a real shot at PR.

Even if you didn’t receive an ITA this time, the fact that IRCC has started Trades draws in 2026 is a strong signal that more will follow throughout the year.

Next Steps for Aspiring Immigrants

  1. Check your CRS score – Use IRCC’s official tool or a professional assessment.
  2. Verify your trade occupation – Make sure it’s still on the 2026 eligible list (cooks and chefs are now excluded).
  3. Improve your profile – Strong language scores (especially French), Canadian work or study experience, and a valid job offer can push your score higher for future draws.
  4. Stay ready – Keep your Express Entry profile up to date. New draws can happen any time.

Canada needs skilled trades workers more than ever, and this draw shows they’re actively inviting them. Whether you’re a plumber in Delhi, an electrician in Punjab, or a welder in Mumbai, this is your moment to take the next step toward Canadian permanent residency.
